If the central question of our time is “when will the apocalypse begin?” Alison OK Frost’s watercolor paintings suggest, “Maybe it’s already started?”
In “Uniformation,” Frost focuses on groups of people in military uniforms, riot gear, and hazmat suits moving in formation, using subject matter taken from documentary photographs. These figures seem to have been stripped of their individuality as they are pulled into a larger, darker force than their own humanity. Frost’s vision is not merely fatalistic or dystopian. With the execution is mesmerizing, exquisitely rendered, and subtly colored, Frost positions art as a way, not to escape the world, but rather a steadfast turning toward it.
